Why STSW? · Why Wooly?

The Method to the Madness!

Our core curriculum is built around the world-renowned Señor Wooly platform — a collection of over 30 brilliantly-designed Spanish music videos created specifically for Spanish students. Most of these videos are only available to teachers like Miss Elisa who purchase an annual license, which also unlocks thousands of online activities for each student enrolled in their classes.

STSW students experience these videos together via Google Meet during live classes, with Miss Elisa leading the way. Then, the real fun begins! Countless group activities pull the language from the videos into real-world scenarios for valuable practice using all four of the main language-learning skills:

Listening

Reading

Speaking

Writing

Meet your teacher

¡Hola! 😃 I’m Miss Elisa!(I use my 1st name online & my middle name, Angela, in person)

Miss Elisa with Señor Wooly (Jim Wooldridge) at a 2019 conference
With the legendary Señor Wooly (Jim Wooldridge) — 2019 conference. Jim posted the shout-out below to his teachers’ group of 10,000+ members.
Facebook post by Jim Wooldridge in his Señor Wooly teachers group: he is headed back to Chicago after the WVFLTA conference in West Virginia, congratulates president Amelia Richter, recommends the conference, and adds a shout-out to Angela Arbogast for all her help, saying he could not have done it without her.
The shout-out itself — posted by Jim Wooldridge to his Señor Wooly teachers’ group.
The Señor Wooly curriculum booth at a 2019 conference
Almost 10 years as a Señor Wooly “super user” — here at his curriculum booth, 2019.

I am a passionate language educator, curriculum innovator, and creator of Spanish The Story Way.

Early on in my first 12 years of teaching Spanish inside institutional systems, both in-person and online, I realized something vital: forcing students to memorize dry grammar charts doesn’t create speakers — it creates bored teenagers.

So, after a painful year of trying to force-feed a terribly old, boring set of textbooks & workbooks on the students of our local high school, I went rogue and began building a far more exciting curriculum for them from online resources that I found during endless hours of hunting. I also received training in TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) and in using CI (Comprehensible Input).

Thankfully, during that year of transition, I had the amazing fortune of stumbling upon the guru of all Spanish teachers: Señor Wooly. Armed with the genius of his creations, I spent the next 8 years specializing in immersive, story-based language acquisition. My classroom was full of energy, laughter, and a healthy dose of zany fun. Many of my students have been almost fanatical in their passion for singing the songs and untangling the cryptic stories behind the Señor Wooly music videos and digital graphic novels (also available to my students under the Señor Wooly license).

Then, I pivoted to online education and spent two unpleasant years chained to a digital version of the same type of grammar-based curriculum that I had broken free from years before. No matter how much I tried to jazz up all those grammar lessons with my own energy, games, and supplemental resources, the level of student engagement never even came close to what I had witnessed while using the Señor Wooly curriculum.

Well, in a moment of desperation, it suddenly dawned on me: I could bring Señor Wooly to the online community of learners! In that moment, Spanish The Story Way was born!

When you or your child “step into” my live synchronous sessions, you’ll see the Spanish language come to life with stories that stick — the catchy songs, the wild ride of a Señor Wooly music video, the bizarre plots and characters of his videos and phenomenal digital graphic novels, or all of the above! What comes next is even more powerful: taking the language of the songs and stories and using it in all sorts of creative ways, together.

I can’t wait to welcome you or your child into our next cohort, where you’ll discover just how fun it can be to learn a language! I will also give you hacks from Day One that can help you achieve native-like pronunciation. And, together, we’ll create authentic Spanish phrases for real-life usage. Let’s get this FIESTA started! 🥳

Curious what a Comprehensible Input lesson actually looks and sounds like? Here is one I made myself, back in my dark-hair days during the Covid quarantine.

Why Stories + Songs Work

Comprehensible input + emotional engagement = real fluency

Language researchers agree: comprehensible input and emotional engagement are the fastest paths to real fluency. So why not use a curriculum that’s built around both?! Here is a sampling of the 30+ Señor Wooly videos we are licensed to use, along with thousands of supplemental online activities and digital worksheets.

Student Account Walkthrough

Now that you’ve gotten a taste of Señor Wooly’s stories and music, here’s a peek at what the actual student dashboard looks like. This is what students use during the week, in between the live sessions, to lock in what they’re learning.

You’ll see how to navigate the videos and their corresponding interactive activities, called “Nuggets,” as well as how to access Wooly’s amazing digital graphic novels (based on the music videos), which include audio and many interactive tools.

Inside the student dashboard

IMPORTANT TO NOTE: As wonderful as this online Sr. Wooly material is, Jim Wooldridge himself asserts that a large part of the language-learning progress occurs as students discuss the music videos as a class and engage in corresponding activities together.

Languages are NOT best learned in isolation, but rather in community.

Like most of the activities originally developed by Miss Elisa for in-person lessons — or like this puppet show written by the Wooly Team — there are countless ways she can modify them for online participation, enabling STSW students to enjoy fun, engaging interactions with the language for long-lasting, true learning.
